See animals, and watch as lions stalk your vehicle
Auto Safari Chapin is an animal park located on the CA-2 highway, near Escuintla, Guatemala. It opened in 1980 and recreates an African safari experience. Their mission is to preserve local fauna and educate the population about the importance of conservation. The park currently contains 96 species of animals and 70 species of plants. Unlike zoos, where visitors view animals in cages, visitors to Autosafari Chapin drive right into the animal pens to see the animals up close.
There are not a lot of rules and seems to be less supervision. The two major rules. One, don’t feed the animals. Two, in the lion pen close your windows.
Combining my friend Madelon’s birthday and my last day in Guatemala, a group of friends and I decided to go to Autosafari Chapin for a Guatemalan safari.
We all agreed, that this was way better than any zoo. At Autosafari Chapin, you are on Safari, just like in Africa. While African Safaris cost thousands of dollars, a Guatemalan Safari at Autosafari Chapin is the price of two cervezas.
In addition to the game park, your ticket also gets you into walking zoo at Autosafari Chapin, includes a boat ride and access to a pool.
Stalked by Lions at Autosafari Chapin
You also, as we learned, a visit to Autosafari Chapin might result in an intense run-in with lions. They stalked our car and appeared quite eager to get inside. Presumably, they were hungry and wanted to eat us. The danger might not have been imminent as it felt like, but when there are four lines stalking your vehicle and you are trapped in a pen with them, things get intense fairly quickly.
