Why Take a Day of Silence?
Taking a day, or multiple days, of silence can serve to heal and reset from the runaway speed of our modern lives.
What is the Renewal Retreat?
The Renewal Retreat is a self-guided and individually implemented day of “Noble Silence” to give your body and mind a chance to calm and reset from the buzzes and whirls of life.
Participants taking the dive are encouraged to take a day off of work and off of life and connectivity. This means planning, and communicating to relevant people about your retreat and the number of days you will be out of contact.
No Leaks in your Container
There would be little use or benefit to endeavor to keep this retreat’s schedule without creating a “container” and commitment convivial to it. This means committing to keeping off social media, the internet, TV, music, and readings. These things are beautiful in their context, but will only serve as “holes” in the ship during the retreat. Don’t cave to compulsions, this retreat correctly deployed can serve as a way for you to calm them.
What is “Noble Silence”?
Noble Silence does not mean that we are not allowed to talk. It means that we don’t have to talk, we have no obligation to talk during that period of the day or night.
Silence becomes Noble when it is an Inner Silence. The mind is calm and at ease. Whenever I hear the sound of a bell, whether it is the outside bell or the telephone or the chiming of the clock, I take it as an opportunity to practice Noble Silence. I go back to my breathing. I feel the air moving in and out of my body.
Note on reaching out with questions:
This retreat is designed to be self-contained and explained—due to the boundless nature of releasing this retreat to the world, I am unable to respond directly to questions regarding the content. I thank you for your understanding leave it up to you to make any necessary adjustments to the schedule as it pertains to your situation.
What to do outside of the scheduled time?
Feel free outside of the scheduled lectures and practiced to simply be. Maybe you will go for a walk and feel each footstep, consciously wash dishes, enjoy a tea truly tasting the nuance, sit outside and listen—whatever you don’t reach impulsively for the “dopamine device.” If there are some programmed urges inside happening, simply notice them. Give yourself the space to experience what’s going on inside you.
Feel free to keep a clock or alarm on hand to keep you in with the schedule.
